How to block Instagram on Chrome

Instagram on the desktop starts with a DM and ends in Reels. The feed and Explore grid are tuned to keep you scrolling, even when you came to reply to one message.

Why Instagram is hard to put down

  • Reels autoplay one after another with no natural end.
  • Explore learns what you linger on and serves more of it.
  • Notifications and DMs give you a reason to open it, and the feed keeps you there.

Block Instagram in four steps

  1. 1Add ZenTab to Chrome. It's free, and your first 7 days include every Pro feature.
  2. 2Open the ZenTab dashboard and go to Site Blocker.
  3. 3Instagram is already in the Social media pack: make sure instagram.com is switched on. If it isn't listed, type instagram.com and click Add site.
  4. 4Open instagram.com. Instead of the site you'll see ZenTab's calm block page, with your streak and a button to start a focus session.

A site covers its subdomains too, so instagram.com also blocks every *.instagram.com address. The free plan blocks 10 sites at a time; if you're at the limit, switch off one you need less, or go Pro for unlimited sites.

Smarter ways to limit Instagram

Many people still need Instagram for messages, a business account or posting. Blocking everything isn't the only option:

Block the whole site

Free

Instagram is in ZenTab's Social media pack, so it's one switch away. The block page offers to start a focus session instead.

Hide Reels, keep messages

Pro

Feed Eraser removes the Reels tab and sends Reels links back to your inbox, so DMs work but the loop doesn't start.

Allow a short daily window

Pro

A 15-minute daily limit covers replying to messages without an open-ended scroll.

Hide the Instagram feed instead

Feed Eraser keeps Instagram working but removes the parts built to keep you scrolling.

When you're tempted to unblock it

Most blockers fail in the same moment: you're tired, the urge hits, and switching the block off takes two clicks. ZenTab adds friction exactly there.

  • I really need this site: the block page can open Instagram for a few minutes after a short wait, so a genuine need doesn't turn into an hour.
  • Strict Mode (Pro): no quick unlocks, you can add sites but not remove or pause them, and turning it off takes a 15-minute cool-down.
  • Commitment lock (Pro): keep Strict Mode on until a date you choose, with no way out early.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Instagram DMs on the computer without seeing the feed?

Yes. With Feed Eraser's Explore and feed filter on, the home feed and Explore grid disappear while instagram.com/direct keeps working.

Will Instagram know I'm blocking it?

No. ZenTab works inside your browser. Nothing is sent to Instagram or to ZenTab about which sites you block.

Block Instagram in a minute

ZenTab is free: block up to 10 sites, hide YouTube Shorts and grow a focus streak. Pro adds unlimited sites, page rules, schedules and daily limits for $10 once.
