How to block Facebook on Chrome

Facebook mixes the useful (groups, events, Marketplace) with an endless News Feed and Reels, so it's easy to open for one thing and stay for twenty minutes.

Why Facebook is hard to put down

  • The News Feed is ranked to maximise time on site, not to show what you came for.
  • Reels and Stories autoplay at the top of the page.
  • Notifications are designed to pull you back several times a day.

Block Facebook in four steps

  1. 1Add ZenTab to Chrome. It's free, and your first 7 days include every Pro feature.
  2. 2Open the ZenTab dashboard and go to Site Blocker.
  3. 3Facebook is already in the Social media pack: make sure facebook.com is switched on. If it isn't listed, type facebook.com and click Add site.
  4. 4Open facebook.com. Instead of the site you'll see ZenTab's calm block page, with your streak and a button to start a focus session.

A site covers its subdomains too, so facebook.com also blocks every *.facebook.com address. The free plan blocks 10 sites at a time; if you're at the limit, switch off one you need less, or go Pro for unlimited sites.

Smarter ways to limit Facebook

Groups, Messenger, events and Marketplace are often genuinely useful. Blocking everything isn't the only option:

Block the whole site

Free

Facebook is in the Social media pack, so blocking it takes one switch.

Hide the News Feed

Pro

Feed Eraser hides the News Feed, Reels and Stories on the home page. Groups, Marketplace and Messenger still work.

Block it on a schedule

Pro

Set Facebook to be blocked on weekday mornings, when your best work happens.

Hide the Facebook feed instead

Feed Eraser keeps Facebook working but removes the parts built to keep you scrolling.

When you're tempted to unblock it

Most blockers fail in the same moment: you're tired, the urge hits, and switching the block off takes two clicks. ZenTab adds friction exactly there.

  • I really need this site: the block page can open Facebook for a few minutes after a short wait, so a genuine need doesn't turn into an hour.
  • Strict Mode (Pro): no quick unlocks, you can add sites but not remove or pause them, and turning it off takes a 15-minute cool-down.
  • Commitment lock (Pro): keep Strict Mode on until a date you choose, with no way out early.

Frequently asked questions

Can I block Facebook but keep Messenger?

Yes. Messenger on the web runs on messenger.com, a separate site, so blocking facebook.com leaves it open. Or keep Facebook unblocked and hide just the News Feed with Feed Eraser.

Is there a way to use Facebook groups without the feed?

Feed Eraser hides the News Feed only on Facebook's home page. Group pages, Marketplace and events load normally.

Block Facebook in a minute

ZenTab is free: block up to 10 sites, hide YouTube Shorts and grow a focus streak. Pro adds unlimited sites, page rules, schedules and daily limits for $10 once.
